Description

Commissioned by one of Alan’s collectors, this green sea turtle is a large, weighty sea turtle with a wide, smooth shell. It inhabits tropical and subtropical coastal waters around the world and has been observed clambering onto land to sunbathe. It is named not for the color of its shell, which is normally brown or olive depending on its habitat, but for the greenish color of the fatty tissue under their skin. They are one of the largest of all sea turtles. Their shells can grow to 3-4 feet in diameter and can weigh as much as 300 – 350 pounds as an adult. Despite their size, green sea turtles have paddle-like limbs called flippers which allow them to move quickly and easily through the water. A healthy green sea turtle can live to be 80 – 100 years.
